Yes, that is exactly what we recommend. As you know the water flows from the bottom up. After your sponge place the soft more open side of FilterFirst pad down against the sponge. The polishing pads go the same way with the soft side facing down.
 
Our pads should make a big difference in water clarity and quality. WIth goldfish, you may need to rinse the pads out or replace them more often than tropical fish.
